We wish you all the best and will definitely track your progress on the day!!!

Here is a poem by Chris Mann specially for you:

The Comrades

Well Vic, I wonder what you’d make of this,

I mean the flag-hung square, the jostling crowds,
a helicopter clattering through the dark,
runners in their thousands, massed down the street,
and someone famous being interviewed
in a bright white glare on the steps of City Hall.

I wish you could be here, right here with us,
dressed in your baggy shorts and tennis shoes,
smelling the wintergreen, the nervous sweat
and feeling strange pricklings in your skin
as speakers boom the anthem down the street
that shifts the day from normal into epic time.

Look at the scaffolding, the tents, the bins,
the marshals with clipboards and yellow bibs.
They do this for nothing, year after year.
It’s a bit like a local Olympics now,
all sorts of money-scheming hangers-on
but still, somehow, decency on a podium.

Isn’t it much, much bigger than you thought?
At times I’ve wondered what was in your mind
when back home from the war to end all wars
you’d sit in the hot steel cab of your train
swabbing your neck and chest with cotton waste
and slowly swigging a bottle of cold sweet tea.

Tell me, didn’t it churn you up inside –
watching each day across the shunting yard
the salesmen on the platform in white shirts,
the women in high-heels and fancy hats
saying goodbye with a kiss and a wave
as if their dads and uncles hadn’t died at all?

Didn’t you really hate it when young blokes
with slicked-back hair in the Railway Hotel
would turn away from you, beer-mug in hand,
and switch the talk to Saturday’s races
the moment you even mentioned the war
and passing round the hat for a memorial?

That must have got to you, as if your pals
who’d marched their youth along the street
in row on row of boots and bayonets,
on their way north, to mud and death in France,
weren’t even worth a few words in a bar.
Is that why you dreamed us into this marathon?

Well Vic, each year, out of that dream emerge
not just the rugby types you started with,
that group of balding friends in boxing vests
trotting off down a farm road with a laugh,
but men and women of all sorts and shapes,
the black, the blonde, the bronze of our humanity.

Does hope, a marathon of hope like this,
you make me ask, remind the heart of grace?
Look, Vic, at what you got going with joy,
a huge, jostling ritual of human decency
whose athletes set off down a cheering street
then toil across the landscape of South Africa.

TRACK-SPEED SESSIONS

You are invited to meet our chairperson  Johan every  Monday at 18:00 on the rugby field of the school for a speed session.

LET’S SEE WHAT STEPHANIE AND LEON WERE UP TO RECENTLY!

Adventure race  by Leon Marais

After all the excitement of the Budget Kolonnade race which our club presented on 17 March, Stephanie and I decided to take on a different challenge.  We entered for the Kinetic Events adventure race at Avianto, Muldersdrift.  the race format is teams of two who complete an unmarked course of approximately 25km with the aid of a map.  You have to visit different checkpoints by foot, kayak and mountain bike.

We entered as a mixed team along with about 100 other teams.  The first leg was a 1.5km running leg with four checkpoints.  It was a mad scramble as people were fighting for a good position while trying to figure out how the maps work.  This was followed by a 15km mountain bike leg with 28 checkpoints.  Unfortunately my navigational skills left much to be desired and we got very lost in search of the first few checkpoints.  Eventually we managed to master the art of riding your mountain bike on a technical course while reading a map.

After the mountain bike leg there was a short obstacle course which had to be dealt with.  We managed to finish 14th out of the mixed teams and 26th overall in a time of 2:31.  The sprint adventure races usually last between 2 and 3 hours and are lots of fun.

Kinetic events are hosting a further 3 adventure races later in the year.  you can get more information at:  http://kinetic-events.co.za/Events/Kinetic-Adventure

Happy running!

BUFFELSDRIFT TRAILS

Most road runners enjoy running off road once in a while for cross training and the sheer pleasure of running in nature.  For those of you who are looking for beautiful trails to run not too for from here, the Buffeslsdrift Mountain Bike Park has recently opened 3 running trails in addition to their cycling trails:  5km, 7km and 10km.  They are in the process of developing 15km and 21 km trails as well.  The trails are clearly marked and route descriptions are available at the start.  Impala, zebra and kudu are frequently spotted on all the routes and there is an abundance of bird life.

Buffelsdrift caters for the runner’s every need:  a coffee shop  overlooking a pond serving light meals and sweets; clean ablution facilities with showers and true hospitality.  The fee per day is R30 and the annual fee R300.  A cycling/running annual combo membership will be R650 for 2018.   The annual fee allows you access 24/7.  Go to http://www.buffelsdriftmtb.co.za/ for detail on their location.

Cas and I have done all three distances recently.  Here are a few photos to wet your appetite!
