\na helicopter clattering through the dark,
\nrunners in their thousands, massed down the street,
\nand someone famous being interviewed
\nin a bright white glare on the steps of City Hall.<\/p>\n
\ndressed in your baggy shorts and tennis shoes,
\nsmelling the wintergreen, the nervous sweat
\nand feeling strange pricklings in your skin
\nas speakers boom the anthem down the street
\nthat shifts the day from normal into epic time.<\/p>\n
\nthe marshals with clipboards and yellow bibs.
\nThey do this for nothing, year after year.
\nIt’s a bit like a local Olympics now,
\nall sorts of money-scheming hangers-on
\nbut still, somehow, decency on a podium.<\/p>\n
\nAt times I’ve wondered what was in your mind
\nwhen back home from the war to end all wars
\nyou’d sit in the hot steel cab of your train
\nswabbing your neck and chest with cotton waste
\nand slowly swigging a bottle of cold sweet tea.<\/p>\n
\nwatching each day across the shunting yard
\nthe salesmen on the platform in white shirts,
\nthe women in high-heels and fancy hats
\nsaying goodbye with a kiss and a wave
\nas if their dads and uncles hadn’t died at all?<\/p>\n
\nwith slicked-back hair in the Railway Hotel
\nwould turn away from you, beer-mug in hand,
\nand switch the talk to Saturday’s races
\nthe moment you even mentioned the war
\nand passing round the hat for a memorial?<\/p>\n
\nwho’d marched their youth along the street
\nin row on row of boots and bayonets,
\non their way north, to mud and death in France,
\nweren’t even worth a few words in a bar.
\nIs that why you dreamed us into this marathon?<\/p>\n
\nnot just the rugby types you started with,
\nthat group of balding friends in boxing vests
\ntrotting off down a farm road with a laugh,
\nbut men and women of all sorts and shapes,
\nthe black, the blonde, the bronze of our humanity.<\/p>\n
\nyou make me ask, remind the heart of grace?
\nLook, Vic, at what you got going with joy,
\na huge, jostling ritual of human decency
\nwhose athletes set off down a cheering street
